40 months of web hosting with HostGator with no Problems!!

by Khaled on March 26th, 2008

Well this is not just another web hosting review about a good host or a bad host company! It is just that I’m really satisfied with the services and the quality hosting I’m having with HostGator since a few years now! So It’s been 40 months that I’m using them and no down-times except once that lasted for something like 5 min, no hidden fees, an excellent and comprehensive tech support available 24/7…
And everything they announce is correct, the reasonably low prices, the Up-time, the huge Disk space and bandwidth, the unilimited web sites and domains! Everything is true…
And today I’ve just realized that I’m using their services since a little bit more than 40 months! and you know what? I’ve been having a presence on the web since 1999 and I’ve never stayed with a host for longer than a year… Because I’m usually quite picky! So may be I should throw a party or something to celebrate this event :).
Try it and you will be really amazed! Whether you need a Shared Web Hosting Plan ( for less than $10/mo) or a Reseller Hosting Plan (starting from less than $25) or even a Dedicated Server you won’t be disappointed! Trust me! This is not a web hosting review for HostGator as much as it is a Primal Scream of satisfaction and joy! and yeah I’m just noticing that I’m using the figure 40 consecutively in my two last blog posts (the other one was about 1on40 “miracleous” SEO services)… Is this a sign or something?

Unlimited Domain Hosting Only $9.95 a Month

DreamHost.com are Overselling!

by Khaled on July 7th, 2006

Yes! DreamHost are Overselling and they acknowledge it! “yes, we are overselling” they say! you don’t believe me? here’s the link to the official DreamHost Blog post where they admit it and claim that it is is the right and smart thing to do in the webhosting business!
Overselling occurs when a host offers a plan to clients with huge features of disk space and Bandwidth for a low price but is, in reality, unable to provide all that amount of ressources hoping that the client (or most of them at least) won’t use all those features! This often come with CPU usage restrictions!!
Dreamhost are offering for just $7.95/month:
-1 FREE domain registration www.yourname.com
- UNLIMITED domains hosted
- UNLIMITED subdomains
- 20 GB Disk, 1 TB Transfer
- 3000 Mailboxes, 75 Shell/FTP Users

That’s huge for that price!! but it seems to work very well! They even have a Ruby on Rails hosting which is a bit slow but seems to be OK. They are among few webhosts that offer Ruby and Ruby on Rails Hosting.
I’ve read many good posts about them, I’ve read bad ones and they are not really my favourite hosting company! I am planning to buy a plan from them as they offer RoR hosting as I said above while my current host does not!
Want to get hosted with them? Use this Promo Code for huge discounts: DARKTRANQUILITY

How Can You Trust A Host?

by Khaled on March 29th, 2006

So you are looking for a new hosting company for the first time ? you are new to this webhosting stuff ? Or you are just fed up with your old host and you just want to switch to something better ? Well, I think that you keep asking
yourself one question “Which hosting company is trustable ?”.To answer this question may be you can look at it in a different way and ask yourself how can I trust a webhost ? what do I look for in host to see if they are trustable or not ?I have been looking for hosts and switching from one another for more than five years, the strategy I came up with is the following:
- I visit their web site see how it looks clean ? tidy ? Professional ? Well yes the look and the design are not too important I guess but it has to be decent not very nice or something that matches my taste or style but just something decent ! it is not very important ! but most of the reputable and honest hosts have clean designs ! if you find a site with a cheap template site that you have seen for a 1000000 times and that costs $5 sorry but the company using it will loose some credibility in my opinion, this is just a point that may add a little something to the overall feel ! that’s all

- I then look to the contact options existing : Phones ? Faxes ? Postal Mail ? Support Desk ? Help/Contact through IM !! Here the most important thing is the phone !

- After that, I read carefully the About section what information they put in there ? are there names ? is it credible ? trustable ? How long have they been in hosting business ? Any information about their servers ? their network ? their datacenters ?

- The next step is to search on google for links to them and reviews about them ! see what people or other sites say about them ? if you don’t find anything or just a little information with this it is not a very goos sign.

- I try to look into their forums (if any) or to ask about them in some big hosting forums

- I gather all what I knew about them Next step is to contact them and this lets me:

- See how long they will take to answer ?

- How is their answer ? are they interested and passionate or just doing this because it is a must ? Are they polite ?

- I ask them some questions:
* How many people work in there ?
* How many in the support crew ? their qualifications ?
* How many Servers ? what Specs ? How old ? where are the datacenters ? the speeds of their Internet backbones ?
* How often do u back up ? How do u back up ?
* What if I needed help at midnight in christmas? is your support really 24/7 ?
* What if I had a script I can’t install would you help ?
* What if I exceeded my Diskspace or Bandwidth ?
* How long will you wait for me if I forgot to pay my bill or was out of town at the payment date ?
* What if I wanted to move to another host ? Can I do it anytime ?

Well, I guess now that you have a good idea about how to proceed to search for a trustable host, this is how I’ve learned to proceed after so many failures in choosing a good host. Good luck !
